Pilot Boats: Unsung Heroes by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Pilot Boats. These are the unsung heroes of commerce as seen in Newport, RI. Pilots are the people that so many never hear about but keep the wheels of commerce turning.

Who is a pilot? They are someone who has usually achieved licensing as a Master Unlimited Tonnage. As if it were not enough to become a Captain, they sit for still more testing. That testing requires redrawing sections of the chart demonstrating "local knowledge".

Day-to-day, they will board one of these vessels and go into the sound (in a variety of conditions). They will leave the vessel and climb up the side of a ship on a Jacob's (rope ladder). They will then provide the "local knowledge" to bring that ship into port.

These ships contain fuel, cargo, automobiles, asphalt, and more. The things that allow us to function.

How do I know? I have been there. I rode on the predecessors of these vessels (the "Rhode Island Pilot" for one) as a youngster. Some of that time logged to achieve my own licensing.
