Patchy Fog Lifted From Offshore by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Patchy fog is not the mariner's favorite type of weather condition. It is thick in some areas and not in others. It can shut down and then lift in an instant. It leaves the navigator on the bridge taking constant bearings. The bow watch is always looking and listening for something in case they see nothing.

Here we see patchy fog in a spectacular display from aboard a ship. We are about a nautical mile offshore. As we look east from Rhode Island Sound and can actually see well into Vineyard Sound. The fog has lifted and a break allows the sunlight to highlight a spot on the water. We enjoy the view as it will not last long.
