Taking Back "Normal" - A Waterfall Story by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Small victories take shape in many forms. Yesterday, that small victory of returning to normal was a waterfall in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Passing by and taking these photos are symbolic of trying to capture some normalcy of life again.

Until March 2020 when our lives were all upended by the COVID-19 shutdowns, I would drive my youngest son to Rhode Island Children's Chorus rehearsals once a week after school. On the way, we would pass a beautiful little scene and I would say to my son, "As soon as Daylight Saving Time comes and I have a bit more light, I want to photograph that scene after I drop you off." Then we, the populace of Rhode Island, were all told to shelter in place and my opportunities were largely caught in that enclosed 'place'.

Yesterday, we had to run out for a grocery curbside pickup at the mega-warehouse in Coventry. A couple of mental roadway calculations said, "It's not that far out of the way and it's along the way, I want to stop off at 'the spot'." So we did. We made some steps toward taking back "normal". The adventurous "us" (our little family). The "outdoor" us. The outdoorsy family that lost the better part of an entire season of 2020 cooped up!

We pulled over and looked at the falls along the Maskerchugg River in East Greenwich, RI. It was worth the stop.
