The Many Sources Of Marine Photography Inspiration by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Inspirations come from many places. My inspiration for taking photos of boats comes from three places. The first is spending a lifetime on and among boats of all types. Sail, power, rowing, pleasure, and commercial vessels; I have handled them all. The second is an appreciation of vessel characteristics. I have a formal study of vessel design.

The third photographic inspiration comes from a book, countless magazines, and one photographer. His name is Peter Barlow and currently lives (the last I knew) in nearby Pawcatuck, CT. My marine surveyor/captain father said that he was someone to watch. My artist grandfather said that he was someone to watch. I watched him. I studied him. I aspire to photograph with similarity (but with my own signature).

I don't have the Point Judith fishing tournaments in the same way that Mr. Barlow did. I do have the area that he photographed often... and it is a place where I grew up and enjoy. The ultimate inspiration is in the love of the topic and conveyance of that joy.

In The Sun's Wake

Note: While I mention Mr. Barlow with admiration and respect, I write of him as a public figure. He is not involved in this writing nor does he have advance knowledge of this writing. If he were ever to see this... that would be an honor.
