There are different types of waves that meet the shore. This is the finish of a surging wave as it rolls up on the shore. The previous wave draws back underneath creating a curl rather than a crest. The effect can transfix on as the wave comes upon the shore and then recedes. Personally, I like to look and listen rather than analyze.
