Bridging the Saugatucket 20211020 850_2329Bridging the SaugatucketBridging the Saugatucket River into Wakefield, Rhode Island in the early morning

A footbridge over a river in a village. The architecture and the placement convey a distinctive, charming, provincial appeal. In the summer, music hums. In the spring and fall, there are birds chirping and suck quacking. In the winter, the wind rustles in the trees.

This is a bridge not only from one place to another but across time and place. We see the remains of ancient mills. We hear the working of the people. And we see the people walking and talking as a community.

So the appeal of this piece of architecture in the middle of Wakefield in South Kingstown, RI is more. It is pedestrian transport, history, and coterie. This is why we cherish these architectural forms; they cement us together in time and place.
