Here I am referring to a couple of Mallard Ducks as if they were steaming through the river. My references are more than the character mechanization of a couple of ducks. I am giving the viewer and reader a glimpse of maritime life on the waterfront.
As we sit viewing ducks on the East Providence waterfront, we are looking across the river. There lies Providence and what was Providence Steamboat Company. Tugboats. This is one of the places where I spent my young life. Many times, even at the age of five, I found myself among big men in the pilothouse of a tug.
Sitting between trips, the pilothouse door open, ducks would often swim by. And the humorous comments would flow. "Flotilla off the port beam! Blow the whistle passing!" Another would ring up the inactive enunciator and announce slowing down to let them pass, "Ahead Slow!"
And the people working the waterfront maintain their good-humored relationships. That includes the wildlife passing through. And ultimately, the maritime community on the waterfront loves the wildlife among them. They are our fellow mariners.
