"I can think of no other edifice constructed by man as altruistic as a lighthouse. They were built only to serve." ~ George Bernard Shaw

Shaw must have spent some time at sea. Or at the very least, he spent some time around people who spent time at sea.

A lighthouse always brings two feelings to a good seaman. The first is a sense of relief of finding a significant navigational mark. The second is a feeling of trepidation in knowing that the lighthouse is there for a reason. They mark shoals and rocky areas; areas of danger.

This winter view of Watch Hill lighthouse shows its warning function. The light is lit. The whistle is blowing. Can you hear it in your mind? The waves are rolling in upon the rocks.

And in return for the lighthouse's efforts, the wind sighs its relief at finding the shore. And it's a warning for those at sea.
