The allure of a fishing boat backed in at a pier is elusive in explanation. The fact is that this is when the stern of the vessel is in its safest position.

When a fishing boat such as this is at work, at sea, the danger of the stern is immense. Catching feet in a net is always in mind. The thought that a wave coming over the bow, sweeping one over the stern is a fear.

And, of course, when we see a vessel backed in, we know that the bow points outward. And that position of the bow means that it will be leaving again.
