Pre-Storm Story_20210821_850_9074Pre-Storm StoryA workboat is hauled up and on its trailer. The lobster traps are hauled up and ashore. This is the scene before a summer cyclonic storm in Southern New England

If I had to pick one photo to tell the story of what happens before a storm on the waterfront, this would be the one. The nervous energy of hauling boats and lobster traps is here. The sensitivity of a working livelihood is here.

In the distance, gathering storm clouds gather to the south. The sun sets to the west casting long, uncertain, shadows, wondering what is to come. Even the sign on the telephone pole indicates that there is only one way to go now.

Storm Henri arrived the next day on August 22, 2021. There were power outages. There was a high degree of maritime damage. And we are hopeful that these preparations preserved these livelihoods. But that was up to the storm.

This is Rhode Island's waterfront. And this is their story of working to survive.
