"Days decrease, And autumn grows, autumn in everything." – Robert Browning.
Where the first colors of fall will appear is always a mystery. The placement is always different. This photo is from a unique year.
The year in which this photo has been very wet. There was record-breaking precipitation throughout the summer. As the weather cools and there is less light, the chlorophyll breakdown in the leaves is later. The moisture delays the annual biochemical reaction in the trees.
If one looks lower, there are grasses along the shore of Worden Pond. This growth is much greater than in previous years. This is the area most shielded from the sun at the bookends of the day. This is where the first colors of autumn occur. And the edges of the pond are afire.
