Making The Ocean Mist by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI GallerySelect Image or Title To See In A Larger Format There are many photographic techniques for displaying waves. Some techniques make the waves smooth and blurred. This is not my way. My way of displaying waves is starker. They are individual punches. I want the viewer to view the power and even the danger of these waves. They are not nice. They are not friendly. In fact, to the uninitiated (and even the familiar), these waves are dangerous. I want the viewer to know this. The danger of these waves does not diminish their beauty. We should feel awe in their raw natural power. Even the sun changes the highlights as the clouds move above. The light shadows, highlights, and occults in the changing sky. And that is how they make the namesake Ocean Mist. Powerful waves pounding on rocks and spewing plumes of spray into the air. See the full photographic series as a video slideshow:
NB: I take steps to protect myself and others in photographing dangerous scenes. At the shore, I plot the tide, wear appropriate apparel, and protect my gear. I observe the period and amplitude of the waves before photographing. Most of all, I find a safe place and choose the appropriate lens to keep myself from danger. I also have someone present to look out for me (thank you to Jen, my wife). If you enjoyed this post, please consider buying us a coffee to continue the work...
