Gulls In The Air At Point Judith. Photography And Text By Keith R WahlGulls In The Air At Point Judith Select Image or Title To See In A Larger Format - See More Below Have you ever been to the shore and watched the gulls on a windy day? Not a windy day as in a breezing up. No, a windy day as in there is a steady wind and gust that are at or near gale force. A gale is a wind blowing at about 26 Knots or 31 MPH and above. Gulls will still fly in these gusts, but it is almost as if they are at play. They will take off, angle to the wind, and then hover. They seem to take a comfortable place in the status quo while floating aloft. If one didn't know better (and we may not), one would say that they are having fun. Point Judith Lighthouse blinks out its pattern of 5 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on again, and 2 seconds off before starting afresh. Vessels about sixteen miles offshore see this warning. The fog signal sounds in reduced visibility every 15 seconds. But the gulls play on as the vessels sight and take bearings on the point. In a way, one becomes envious of the attitude of the gulls enjoying the weather as all others batten down.
