The southern Rhode Island shore has a "Knee High or Die" reputation among surfers. Narragansett in particular makes this condition look good.

"Knee High or Die" refers to wave height as considered by a surfer. In shore, this is a two-foot wave. Due to the way surfers estimate wave height, a two-footer wave could actually be three or four feet. For example, it depends on whether the surfer is measuring the wave’s face or rear. It's a rideable wave for a surfer.

But when storms pass off of the coast and further out to sea, the waves change. There is a significant increase, especially on the flood tide. And then the pilgrimage of surfers begins. Narragansett Beach swarms with them, especially if the local colleges are in session. We even have our own local venerable professors of the sport with names like "Peter Pan".

They come to ride the bigger waves on our shore. And all are grateful that they trained in the "Knee High or Die" conditions as the waves become serious.
