When on the water, the subject that we are looking for is often found by looking for other things. Many hours in the fog on bow watch taught me such things. Looking for something that might be there in the murk of what was there. This teaches you to look for shadows and shifting of light.

This is how it is best to look for the first light on the water. The soft, moody, early light is not as obvious as the objects illuminated. The transition to light is gradual and might creep up on one if we don't pay attention to the whole picture.

So, it is with the Fall scene on this boat and the east facing shore of Narragansett. First light creeps up over Conanicut and Dutch Islands. The light crawls across the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. And finally, it rests to the starboard side of the moored boat and the Autumn leaves of the homes on shore.
