In Sympathy with Clouds. Photography and Text by Keith R WahlSelect Image or Title to See in a Larger Format - See More Below Mariners, whether they be ashore or at sea, spend a lot of time considering the weather. Habits of checking wind direction, tides, light levels, and visibility never leave us. We do it whenever we are even within the scent of the shore. We internalize the need to note and log these aspects of weather, if only to those around us. There are things learned from a mariner's constant weather observations. That is how in sympathy the various elements are with one another. It helps us to predict the weather. The state of the tide and the wind might help us determine when rain will arrive. It might also help us know when to expect that the glass will fall, and the wind will "pipe up". Observing a front move in overhead from Brenton Point in Newport, RI, some of these elements take form. The light changes with abandon as the sun "moves" in and out. Even without a barometer we know that the pressure is dropping. Objects are standing proud on the horizon. Checking the tide, we know we have a little time before the weather sours as the tide is still outbound. When the tide changes, rain will come. And we know that it all works together.
