Stacked Rocks at Brenton Point 20220417 850_7221Stacked Rocks at Brenton Point A temporary and impromptu cairn construct at the shoreline of Brenton Point, Newport, Rhode Island

A few short years ago, in this very spot at Brenton Point, I taught our sons to skip rocks. Now, like their dad in a sense, they cannot resist the urge when they find that perfect stone. They have to feel the wind and look at the water, then hurl the stone.

So, I understand the urge that others have to stack stones at the shore. The challenge presents itself and sometimes the urge is irresistible. Cairns, stacked stones, goes back to ancient times. It may be the urge is antediluvian. Whether this drive is or not, the sight makes for a varied view as we traverse Newport, Rhode Island's rocky shore.
