Tiny and Red Seeking Light from the Shadows
Somewhere between the light of day and the shadow of afternoon, spring flowers dither. They want the light of nourishment and seek that cool of the shadow. They seek both and want neither. In this place of faltering and inconsistent light, the flowers take on an ancient quality. No, they are not in a state of decay, but they take on qualities of long ago and a distant venue. We start to envision the flowers in gardens and fields of old and far away. Is that the light of Paris? Are we seeing the florals of Stockholm? Is this classic Istanbul? No. None of these. It is on the grounds of a university in Rhode Island. This is another beautiful way that the halls of academe take us to another plane of experience. And we should bless and thank the botanists and groundskeepers for sharing their skills.
