Eleanor's Spring Rain on Red Maple. Photography and Text by Keith R WahlSelect Image or Title to See in a Larger Format - See More Below
When I am photographing, I have memories and stories stirring in my overactive mind. This is a memory that comes around every spring. My mother was a nurse. In my high school years, she worked the eleven-to-seven in a nursing home. She had every other weekend off. This is to say that she kept some unusual hours. During the high school year, she often came home from work after I had gone to school. In the spring and summer, if I was not working on a boat or ship somewhere, I would see her more often. Many times, I would find her out in the yard sitting under our maple trees. When it rained, I would find her looking at the red maple while sipping her coffee. Mom has long since gone. We lost her a decade and a half ago. But when spring comes to Rhode Island and the leaves of the red maple unfurl, memories stir. And when there are raindrops on the leaves, there is a faint whisper saying that Eleanor is sipping her coffee nearby.
