As a young man, I was always on the waterfront. One of the common stops with my father, a marine surveyor, was Snug Harbor.

At this little place, I was always impressed the sports fishing boats. They were always of various types. Bertram, Chris Craft, Owens, and the like. What always caught my eye were the meticulous wooden boats.

On a recent evening, I passed through Snug Harbor as I am apt to do. It is so wonderful to walk there and look at the boats. And there were my old friends, the wooden sports fishing boats, albeit more than forty years later. They are still in good shape. They still shine with pride of ownership. And they still shine in the end of day sunlight, well cleaned after usage.

And the pride in these boats makes sense. They are livelihood. They are recreation. They are life to these people. And the attitude towards these boats is a pleasant throwback to experience. This is a way of life preserved.
