Art and art history, while not a major concentration, is a part of my background. I received education both from an artist grandfather and in college. My primary background is in the sciences from an academic perspective. From a maritime perspective, I am a 'hawser piper', someone who started at the bottom and came up through the ranks.

Having many endeavors in life, I look at the world with appreciative eyes. When I refer to my art history classes, I remember the discussions of the brush strokes of the masters. And then, I see the clear brush stroke on the lobster trap buoys on the waterfront.

I look at the knot work and think of the guilds of marlinspike sailors. Knots and knotwork is an elaborate skill that is beautiful in its utility. There are cases where marlinspike work finds its way to museums.

The point is that there is something to appreciate wherever we go. And while art is often at shows and museums, it is also on the waterfront and other unexpected places. And this leads to cognizance of those who perform the tasks. Their work, in all forms, has meaning.
