People love labels. They make us feel in control of our world and environment. I know, I worked in creating databases and data warehouses for many years. Labels help us to categorize and understand what is going on in our lives. Parse the data so that we are able to find and use this information later.

Nature and the shore especially defy this concept of labeling and categorization. The shore is not made up of beach sand, rocks and seaweed. The shore comprises these things and more. It meets fields, meadows and woods. It meets sun and sky. When we, in our hubris, think that we have this figured out, another element appears.

Nothing at the shore is homogeneous. The sky and clouds show variations where a storm has pushed through. Haze forms in the air as the waves roll in and blur the early evening light. There are variations in the mists depending on whether the waves strike sand or rocks. The grasses wave in the breeze and show differing colors and hues as the sun dips behind clouds. This shows that the shore is dynamic and alive.

This is the magic of the shore. It humbles us. It defies categorization and becomes an experience. And in turn, it is the experiences that defy categorization that make us feel alive. Then, when we share these experiences with others, it creates emotional connection. This surpasses data. Meaning that exposure to the shore keeps us in touch with our humanity.
