What Do Day Lilies Do in the Evening? Photography and Text by Keith R WahlScience Stimulates Human Connections Select Image or Title to See in a Larger Format - See More Below
Flowers help us in many ways. In school and throughout life we hear about their benefit to our ecology and environment. We all have heard about how plants and flowers produce oxygen in our atmosphere. That is, of course, photosynthesis. Green plants using sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct. Photosynthesis is the science. Flowers also provide us with aesthetics. They beautify our homes, living areas, towns and fields. In turn, beauty is a relatable social lubricant. Such is the case of these lilies as photographed. My wife and I were walking in Peace Dale village while our sons were in their "Summer Strings" rehearsal. As I was taking a photo, an old high school friend saw us (outside her house) as she came home from work. A summer evening conversation ensued. One of those pleasant conversations that starts off with flowers but goes everywhere and nowhere because there is so much to catch up on. It is just good to talk at that point. The fact is that there was another conversation over flowers that evening. We were near Narragansett Pier and I had asked permission to take some more flower photos. In gaining permission there was another acquaintance made (who now waves as I drive by). In 2022, I would posit that we have had a couple of years of sporadic isolation. We need to follow the science to make our world better. That is, plant some flowers. Then, let them work their environmental and aesthetic magic and help us to make human connections again. Can I prove that this will work, walking, taking photos, and observing the beauty of flowers and people? Empirically, yes, I can. But further research is necessary.
