Where We've Been. Photography and Text by Keith R WahlImagination and constructive frivolity Select Image or Title to See in a Larger Format - See More Below
Cairns have a new emphasis of meaning as of late. The tacks of rocks have had a meaning. At the very least, the meaning has become as transient as their existence. Cairns appear for a broad variety of purposes. In prehistoric times, they were markers, as memorials and as burial monuments. In modern times, cairns are landmarks, especially to marking the summits of mountains. Cairns are also used as trail markers. They vary in size from small stone markers to entire artificial hills. Cairns vary in complexity from loose conical rock piles to elaborate, immense, structures. The cairns that we encounter along the shore of Rhode Island are more ephemeral. These are temporary structures will not last. These that we photographed are as permanent as they will become. What do they mark? The imagination of good friends on an afternoon on the rocky shore.
