A Dragonfly Lights in Usquepaug. Photography and Text by Keith R Wahl"Today I saw the dragonfly come from the wells where he did lie... A living flash of light he flew." - Alfred, Lord Tennyson Select Image or Title to See in a Larger Format Walking along the edges of Glen Rock Reservoir in Usquepaug, RI, one finds many predators. There are eagles, hawks, herons, and dragonflies. Yes, dragonflies. In this case, there was an insect lighting on a stick. The summer of 2022 has the mark of drought upon it. Sticks have gathered on the edges of lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Looking among this detritus and debris is as much a matter of safety as curiosity. There may be animals hiding or trapped in these areas. Here, I found a Golden-Ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii). Researching the species, I unearthed this phrase: "A voracious predator. It will even eat other dragonflies. Among the longest dragonfly species." This is an interesting find.
