It is infrequent that a decisive moment is so real. It jumps up in front of you in stark revelation and grabs you and says, "This is it!"

But on a recent evening, the symbolic moment came before me while walking with my oldest son. We were rambling along the local lake and he was sitting on a dock for a moment as young men will do. We both were looking out at the lake in a moment of contemplation. Soon, he and his brother will be back in school. Summer will close and cultural and meteorological Autumn will begin. But outward signs of this transition are here. It is rare that seasons have a sudden revelation.

Even so, a sudden and decisive revelation happened to us on this evening. A Maple leaf in red, yellow, and orange floated by. Fish were touching the surface around the leaf, making ripples in the water. And the waning blue and white of the summer sky reflected on the lake's surface. And the decisive moment was before us.
