Beetles Before Restoration. Photography and Text by Keith R WahlRestoring a boat enhances the soul Select Image or Title to See in a Larger Format Beetle Cats in shades of worn buff stacked and awaiting restoration at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island. The first boat that I restored was a Beetle Cat that I managed to buy with money earned from quahogging when I was fourteen. I only had $400, so I had to restore that I bought. Fortunately, I was the son of a marine surveyor and had access to Leo Telesmanick (the man who more than likely built these very boats). He took a liking to me and taught me well. Restoring that boat (which is still in existence and is as a living being to me) was one of the most formative experiences of those years.
