There is an ebb and flow of tidal current running between Gooseberry Island and Snug Harbor. This keeps the water clean in this strong current. The result is a variety of shells deposited from the pond. Quahog, scallop, oyster, and others. As a result of these currents the shells are as pristine as the surrounding waters.

Give me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation,
My gown of glory, hope’s true gage;
And thus I’ll take my pilgrimage.
