Shell of Subtle ColorsSummers in Southern New England have seen an influx of red seaweed at the beaches. Torn from the seabed and washed ashore, it colors all that it touches. Then the sun mellows the coloring and reveals the biochemical reds and other hues.

The result is that the shells touched by the red seaweed have subtle hues in the material. The ridges on each shell accumulate coloring in various shades. In later seasons, the array of colors at the beach becomes varied and wonderful.
