I am sometimes asked about my technique I use when photographing the moon. The questions range from what type of tripod I use for stabilization to my camera settings.

The truth is my settings are a relative constant. Once I have the right ISO, aperture and shutter speed, I create a preset and make minor adjustments.

As far as tripod goes, I am it. Sailing on ships, I learned how to steady handheld instruments on a moving deck. Those are skills that are part of my muscle memory and transfer to photography. It is all gimbaling of legs (*soft knees"), tightening of elbows against the rib cage, and breath control. Kettlebell swings help reinforce these skills.

That is my technique. It won't work for everyone, but it works for me.
