Revelations of an Early Spring Walk. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlWhen old yields to new... Our oldest son is finishing his homework, but the sun is shining and spring is upon us. It is time to take a walk around the neighborhood. It is time to revel in new things. It is time to come out of winter hibernation and breathe the new air. My wife, younger son, and I decide to open the door and venture out. As we walk down by "our" lake, Indian Lake, we find the detritus of past seasons. Leaves that are floating in the water as new grasses start to sprout. We remember the past seasons as we look forward to the new. I take note of an old, abandoned boat in the reeds. I always notice boats. The idea pops into my head, as it always does, whether this boat is redeemable. I file the thought away as we walk on. As we come to the end of our walk, we find a pleasant surprise. Tulips are popping up out of the ground at a friend's house. Literal symbols of rebirth are here before us. This is the hope of spring. We are happy to have taken this little sojourn as we return to fix dinner. Tin Leaves As the first rays of spring sunshine, oak leaves remain from autumn at the water's edge. Quoting my grandfather, and remembering his deep voice, he would say, "Those oak leaves. They are like tin!" Future Signs Among Past Remnants Leaves of the past seasons float upon Indian Lake as sprouts of the new season appear. The future is being built upon the past. Every spring, we find one or more of these. A boat abandoned in the brush. Forgotten. My mind starts wondering if this little sailboat is resorable. Will the owner take an offer? Are the spars intact somewhere? Is the hull sound enough? Because this is a boat that needs to gather wind and skip across waves. It is not meant to be lingering in reeds.
