I remember waking up one morning in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and looking out the window. I was then transported to many other places that I have been to that represented the same calm. There are certain elements of these places that come together and make it easier to breathe.

On occasion, I find myself transported to the same state on the backroads of my home state, Rhode Island. I look at the places and realize that they have similar elements. There is not a great deal of travel in these places. There is classic, if rustic and sparse, architecture. The roads wind. There are small bridges that cross invisible borders. Towns blend within a few footsteps. There is water there, and if we are fortunate, the smell of salt. The sun rises to greet us and bids a gentle adieu in the evening. When we turn opposite of the sun, the view is still breathtaking and of equal serenity.

We often have to work to find these tranquil, quiet places. Sometimes, we want to keep the secret to ourselves. But in this case, it is too good not to share the Middlebridge between South Kingstown and Narragansett.
