Endeavor of the Early Morning Sun. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlComings and goings Endeavor in the Early Morning Sun
The arrival of the R/V Endeavor always gives me a childlike thrill. The vessel first arrived in Narragansett Bay in 1973. Dignitaries such as Senator Claiborne Pell were aboard the M/V New Shoreham to greet her. I was a quiet ten-year-old sitting in the after end of the pilothouse of the New Shoreham with my father as captain. This morning, I was at the URI Bay Campus with my oldest son as I noted the superstructure from the parking lot. I walked over to what I suggested was the "best view on campus" so we could take a look at the Endeavor. I figured that it must have arrived a few short hours before the 0700 time that we were there. All lines were secured, and the main engines shut down, but the generators were still running. The vessel was not yet hooked up to shore power. Soon, the R/V Endeavor will depart Narragansett Bay for the last time. The task of laying a keel for her replacement has occurred. I saw the Endeavor arrive and I will see her go. But for now, I will delight in the thrill of seeing her with my son this early morning. Endeavor in the Early Morning Light
