Last night, I had the opportunity to photograph the moon over Rhode Island. I had just come home from our sons' spring jazz concert. It was a clear and crisp night, and the moon was in its first quarter phase.

The moon was also high in the sky, making it easier to capture its details and contrast. I use a telephoto lens to zoom in on the lunar surface, experimenting with different exposure settings. I tend not to use a tripod. I hold the camera as I would use a sextant on a ship (along with the breathing techniques to steady the instrument).
