Fishing Boats and Yarns to Spin. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlAn Ocean State vignette Fishing Vessel Spring Departure It was a chilly morning in early April, and the spring sun was high in the sky. A couple walked along the western break wall of the Point Judith Harbor of refuge, enjoying the fresh air and the scenic view. They stopped to watch a fishing boat heading out to sea, its engines humming and its nets ready. They wondered what kind of fish they would catch on this adventure, and how hard their work would be. They felt a mix of admiration and curiosity for the fishermen, who faced the unpredictable ocean every day. Fishing Vessel Spring Departing They couple saw seagulls flying overhead and cormorants diving into the water. They heard the waves crashing against the shore. They smelled the salty air, and the faint aroma of fish. Fishing Vessel Spring Embarkment They knew they had found a special place. They decided to come back again someday, maybe in a different season, maybe for a longer time. They wanted to see more of this beautiful harbor. Fishing Vessel Spring Farewell When one lives along the shore, there are many stories that come to mind. When there are as many miles of shoreline as there are in the Ocean State, there are that many more yarns to spin.
