The waves roll in, breaking well off the beach showing the change of the underwater shelf over the winter. The sun is high and the color of the waves change from the dark blue of winter to the greens of spring.

People, in general like categories. They like to say that something is this, or that, or the other thing. But some scenes transcend categories. There is more than one thing present, and that is what stirs the emotions.

Here we are at East Matunuck State Beach on an early spring late morning. The sun is high, and the air is warming. The Block Island Ferry is departing Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. The waves have a quality that hints of summer.

Are these photos seascapes? Are they landscapes? Are they of transportation and ships? No. Yes. They are these categories and more. They are the promise of summer adventures to come. They are hope for something special - Rhode Island shoreline hope. And that is what makes the spirit soar.
