The Caper of the Absconding Gull. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlHe ran away with the clam like someone was chasing him with a gat To those who know me, there is no secret that I often escape into classic pulp fiction. Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Spider, Tarzan, John Carter, Buck Rogers, Sherlock Holmes, and more. It is the thing that stimulates my imagination and slows my mind at the end of the day. Gulls are scavengers. Thieves. Or at least they take on the appearance of thieves even if they exist as their natural selves. They always seem to be pulling off a great caper like the over-the-top villains of a pulp novel. And we see that here in this scene at the beach. It is natural for a gull to find a clam, drop and smash the shell, and then enjoy the spoils of the effort. But they always look sneaky and guilty about it. They always look like they are trying to get away with something. I cannot help but think that they are all students of John Sunshine.
