A Jibe is an Exciting Maneuver. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlWhy they call it a boom In sailing, a jibe can be an exciting and even dangerous maneuver. Some crews have learned why a certain spar of horizontal orientation possesses the name of "boom" while jibing. The excitement comes after the jibe. The wind gathers in the sails. The boat will lurch and there is sudden acceleration. And then the rigging and the hull will whistle and hum with the gathering speed. It is exhilarating to say the least. Yesterday, May 10, 2023, the Brazil to Newport leg of the Ocean Race had a jibe from the 11th Hour Racing team as they approached the finish line. It was a necessary move, but it added drama and excitement. It was the perfect way to end this leg of the race.
