Super-continental in Rhode Island

Sea, Sky, Salt and Rocks at the Shore

I encounter many people with ideas about the Rhode Island shore. Most of the descriptions are of summertime and sandy beaches. Of the four hundred miles of Rhode Island shoreline, those beaches are a small percentage. The rest is rocky, marshland, and waterfront usage.

Here, we focus on the rocky shoreline. A geologist once told me that the rocks of the coast of Rhode Island are the same as those in southern Africa. A remnant of Pangaea. And we can see that at Black Point in Narragansett.

Black Point is an example of where the ocean meets the rocky shoreline. We see salt stains in the rocks from the dynamic of tide. All forms of organic matter thrive from the rains, and there is still more life in the tidepools. And we see the whole of it extend into Rhode Island Sound where the fish abide.

The whole scene brings out people like me who cannot sit still and lay out on the beach. I need to hike, move and explore. Others like to cast a line and fish in this area. And with these activities, the shoreline adventures extend across four seasons.
