One of the most relaxing and rewarding ways to spend an evening is to take a walk around Indian Lake in South Kingstown. This beautiful lake is surrounded by trees, flowers and wildlife, and offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

But what makes this walk even more special is the stunning sunset that paints the sky with vibrant colors. The sun dips below the horizon, creating a dazzling display of orange, pink, purple and blue. The reflection of the sun on the water adds to the beauty and creates a magical atmosphere.

However, lately, the sunset has been different. The light is being influenced by smoke in the air from wildfire smoke from northern Canada (May 2023). This smoke has traveled thousands of miles and reached our region, affecting the air quality and the visibility. The smoke also alters the color and intensity of the sun, making it appear redder with more orange, and dimmer than usual.

While this may seem like a negative effect, it actually creates a unique and dramatic sunset that is worth seeing. The smoke filters out some of the shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue and green, and allows more of the longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, to reach our eyes. This results in a deeper and richer color palette that contrasts with the darkening sky.

The smoke also enhances the scattering of light by the particles in the atmosphere, creating a soft glow around the sun and a hazy effect on the horizon. The sun looks larger and more mysterious as it sinks into the smoke. The clouds also reflect the colors of the sun, creating a stunning contrast with the darkening sky.
So, if you are looking for a unique and memorable experience, I recommend taking a sunset walk at Indian Lake in South Kingstown. You will be amazed by the beauty and diversity of nature.
