I have always had a purpose in photographing the moon. In my college days, I was a Physics major and a TA in Astronomy. I have practiced and taught celestial navigation. And then, I had children, and I wanted to show them that science is something that is practiced every day by average people. That grew to entering classrooms and talking about the topic. It is a way to be a citizen scientist.

Citizen science is a way of involving the public in scientific research and discovery. One example of citizen science is photographing the moon and sharing the images with astronomers. By doing this, you can help scientists study the lunar surface, identify features and craters, and track changes over time. Photographing the moon is also a fun and rewarding hobby that can spark your curiosity and creativity. You don't need expensive equipment or special skills to take pictures of the moon. You can use a smartphone, a digital camera, or a telescope with a camera attachment. The best time to photograph the moon is when it is not full, because then you can see more details and shadows on its surface. You can also try to capture different phases of the moon, or take pictures during lunar eclipses or occultations. There are many online platforms and communities where you can share your moon photos and get feedback from other enthusiasts and experts. Some of them are Moon Zoo, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), and The Virtual Telescope Project. By participating in these projects, you can contribute to scientific knowledge and enjoy the beauty of our natural satellite. Or you can use the skill of photographing the moon to influence young minds at your own back door.
