Sailing out of Rhode Island's Newport Harbor can be deceptive. All might look placid, but not all is at it seems. There are swells and wind variations to deal with, even on the calmest days.

There is deep water, some of the deepest in the United States, coming up the east passage of Narragansett Bay. This means that the swells from Rhode Island Sound roll off of Newport Harbor. In the summer, the prevailing southwest wind blows off the sound and off of Newport.

Then some physics and geology make their sciences known. They rocky shores of Aquidneck and Conanicut Islands that form the east passage narrows. As the swells come in off the sound and the winds come through this geologic aperture, their effect changes. This is the Bernoulli Effect springing out of the classroom and making itself real. Speed pressure and fluid motion intensifies.

In the end, sailing out of Newport can be deceiving. But that does not mean that it's not an awesome sailing experience.
