My Rhode Island family and I recently took a trip to Chimney Rock State Park in North Carolina. We were all excited to see Hickory Nut Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River.

The hike to the bottom of the falls was a moderate one, but it was worth it for the views. We were returning from a longer hike to the top of Chimney Rock, but that is a story for another day. The falls are absolutely stunning, and the mist from the water was refreshing on a hot summer day.

We spent a lot of time at the base of the falls, taking pictures and just enjoying the natural beauty. We also saw some interesting plants and animals, including a few deer.

Overall, our visit to Hickory Nut Falls was a great experience. It was a fun and educational day for the whole family.

• Bring snacks and water.
