The Golden Eagle. Photography and Text by Keith R WahlA social hunter
The Golden Eagle is one of the largest and most powerful birds of prey in North America. It is found in a variety of habitats, including mountains, forests, and open areas. The Golden Eagle at Roger Williams Park Zoo is a female named Gina. She is about 2.5 feet tall and weighs 9.9 pounds. She has a wingspan of about 7 feet. Gina's feathers are a dark brown color with a golden sheen on her head and neck. She has a yellow beak and talons. Golden Eagles are carnivores, and their diet consists of small mammals, such as rabbits, rodents, and marmots. They will also eat birds, fish, and reptiles. Golden Eagles are excellent hunters, and they use their sharp eyesight and talons to catch their prey. Gina is a very active eagle, and she loves to fly. She can soar for long distances, and she can even dive at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. Gina is also a very social bird, and she enjoys interacting with her keepers and the other animals at the zoo. Here are some other interesting facts about Golden Eagles:
