This means that the moon was about 7% illuminated, and it appeared as a thin crescent in the night sky. The moon was visible in the western sky after sunset, and it set around 11:00 PM EDT. I saw the waxing crescent moon from my backyard in Rhode Island at 8:39 PM EDT. The moon was low in the sky, and it was clear of a few wispy clouds.
