Serendipity and a Moth. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlUnexpected, but a pleasant moment Serendipitous Block Island Moth Serendipity is the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. In photography, serendipity can lead to the creation of truly unique and memorable images. One example of serendipity in photography is when a photographer is out taking pictures and they happen to capture a moment that they would not have been able to plan for. For example, a photographer might be walking down the street, and they see a person doing something unexpected, like juggling or dancing. If the photographer is quick enough to react, they can capture this moment on camera and create a truly special image. Another example is this moth. The moth is not actually on Block Island as suggested. It is resting beside a bit of fungus on tree bark that looks like a chart of Block Island. It was captured because my sons said, "Hey look, there's a moth on the tree!" in our back yard. It was a completely unexpected yet pleasant, serendipitous, surprise. Another example of serendipity in photography is when a photographer is using their imagination to create a scene that would not be possible in real life. For example, a photographer might combine two different images to create a composite image, or they might use Photoshop to add elements to an image that were not originally there. By using their imagination, photographers can create images that are both visually stunning and thought-provoking. And some, cause an unexpected chuckle.
