Waxing Gibbous Moon of September 26, 2023. Photography & Text by Keith R WahlBright in a clear sky Waxing Gibbous Moon September 26, 2023 On September 26, 2023, the moon was in the waxing gibbous phase, meaning that it was more than half illuminated but not yet full. The moon was 88% illuminated, 11.41 days old, and 363,396.36 kilometers from Earth. The sun was 0.53 degrees away from the moon in the sky, and 149,968,223.72 kilometers from Earth. The waxing gibbous moon is a beautiful sight. It rises in the late afternoon (early evening) and sets early the next morning before dawn, and it can be seen in the southeastern sky during the evening hours. The moon's bright light can be used to guide your way through the night, and its craters and mountains can be explored with a telescope. On September 26, 2023, the waxing gibbous moon was paired with the planet Saturn in the southeastern sky. The two objects were separated by about 2.7 degrees of sky, and they made for a stunning sight. If you missed the waxing gibbous moon on September 26, 2023, don't worry! The moon will continue to wax until it reaches full moon on September 29, 2023.
