When the Snug Harbor Beckons (a sea shanty). Photopoetry by Keith R Wahl.

This sea shanty of a poem is inspired by the passenger experience on a head boat. A head boat is a large vessel that charges a fee per person for a scheduled fishing trip. Some passengers are experienced anglers, while others are novices. But after a day of fishing together, they all feel like old friends and seasoned "old salts".

When the Snug Harbor Beckons

Bound for Snug Harbor

The sun dips low, the sky aflame, fish holds are full, our bellies tame,
A day of toil on Rhode Island Sound, where fish abound, both fat and round.
Our salty beards and sunburnt skin, a tale they tell of battles won,
With rod and line, we faced the tide, and sent our supper down the slide.

Heave ho, me lads, and sing a song, the Snug Harbor beckons, journey long,
But hearts are light and spirits high, as our ship cuts through the evening sky.
Shoulders broad and voices strong, we've shared the sweat, we've shared the song,
A brotherhood forged in wind and spray, beneath the sun's ethereal ray.

From dawn's first light to twilight's shush, we chased the cod, the flounder, hush,
With calloused hands and practiced eye, we sent the hooks a-flying high.
The ocean's bounty, vast and deep, enough for all, our secrets keep,
For those who know her fickle ways, and sing her praise in salty days.

Heave ho, me lads, and sing a song, the Snug Harbor beckons, journey long,
But hearts are light and spirits high, as our ship cuts through the late day sky.
Shoulders broad and voices strong, we've shared the sweat, we've shared the song,
A brotherhood forged in wind and spray, beneath the sun's ethereal ray.

The galley fire crackles bright, a promise warm, of food and light,
With tales of fish and near escapes, we'll fill the mugs and raise our capes.
For in this life, so hard and fast, these moments sweet, they forever last,
The bond of men who face the sea, a friendship true, eternally.

So, raise a glass, ye salty souls, to weathered boats and fish-filled holes,
And may the Snug Harbor always be, a haven warm for you and me!
